📍 Galle Fort

Sri Lanka

About This Destination

On the southwest coast, Galle Fort is a stark contrast to the mountains, offering a unique blend of European architecture and South Asian traditions. Originally built by the Portuguese in 1588 and extensively fortified by the Dutch, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a “living” fort where people still live and work within its massive coral-stone walls. Walking along the ramparts at sunset is a local tradition, providing views of the Indian Ocean on one side and the iconic white Galle Lighthouse on the other. Inside the fort, the narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with restored Dutch-era mansions that now house boutique shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes. It is a place where you can explore centuries-old churches and museums in the morning, and spend the afternoon watching local “stilt fishermen” or exploring the nearby turquoise bays of Unawatuna.
